A single-track lane in Dunham-on-the-Hill, Cheshire, was blocked off by two abandoned mobile homes – one placed inside the other.

But residents and local politicians have said that this isn’t the first incident of this nature.

Chair of Dunham Hill and Hapsford Parish Council, Keith Bradley, described the incident as a “major, ongoing problem”.

He said: “What we have witnessed here is absolutely unbelievable.

“This has been dumped on an ‘S’ bend on a single track lane which apart from anything else is a danger to unsuspecting drivers or cyclists driving from the village.

“Fly-tipping continues to wreck the lives for those of us living and working in the countryside.

“Significant progress needs to be made to stop fly-tipping and we are calling on the council to investigate this ongoing issue further and to monitor fly-tipping within this problematic area more closely, including installing/providing CCTV.”

One man who lives in the area – but did not want to be named – agreed that the issue was “ongoing”.

He said: “Obviously, we can’t point the finger at the travelling community as we simply don’t know who is responsible.

“Most of them are well-behaved but we have had issues with mess being left behind by them before and fly-tipping is an ongoing issue around here.

“It does make your blood boil as you just can’t believe the audacity of it.

“Those caravans can weigh several tons so it’s going to be quite a task to remove it.

“How they have managed to get two caravans into one is pretty bizarre as well.

“I’ve seen sofas dumped before but never two entire caravans.”

She said: “Our officers are now investigating the site and arranging for the vehicles to be removed as soon as possible after we were contacted by Cheshire Police’s Rural Crime Team.

“In the meantime, the lane has been closed as a safety precaution.

“There is no excuse for fly-tipping at all, it costs money to clear away and affects our communities, as well as potentially local wildlife.

“In this case, it has also caused a dangerous obstruction on the road. We will take any steps necessary to find and prosecute offenders.

“If anyone saw these caravans in transit this weekend or has any information regarding this incident please get in touch.”

Anyone with information can contact the council’s regulatory services team on 01244 973708 or Crime Stoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
